Why Do You Serve? Share in the #IServeBecause Contest

March 28, 2013

As AmeriCorps Alums, we took the AmeriCorps oath to serve for a number of reasons and we continue to live out that promise as members of our national and local communities. Whether we are motivated by our faith, citizenship, or civic duty, we proudly live out a Lifetime of Service in our Life after AmeriCorps. Like the Atlanta AmeriCorps alumni shared in the video above, our unique and personal reasons for giving back create a powerful collective narrative for the need for service in our country. Now more than ever, the future of national service depends on the support of AmeriCorps Alums like you.

Last week, the House of Representatives passed a budget blueprint calling for the elimination of the Corporation for National and Community Service. While we’ve heard these threats before and have advocated against the cuts, this time is different.  Both sides have the goal of a reduced federal budget and decreased deficit, which means federal programs are not safe from being eliminated.

That’s why we’re proud to launch a new opportunity to share your AmeriCorps story and how it’s impacted your life and career.  AmeriCorps Alums,  in partnership with the Save Service in America Coalition, a campaign led by Voices for National Service and ServiceNation, is launching the first ever “I Serve Because…” Video Contest. As Senator Tom Harkin explains in his own “I Serve Because…” video, “The future of national service depends on your voice being heard.

After you’ve recorded your submission, make sure to share out your video through social media to your personal networks and Congressional delegates representing you in Washington. It’s important that our representatives know our AmeriCorps story to help guide their votes. Here are some ways you can spread the word on Twitter:

There’s something powerful in hearing the AmeriCorps story from the individuals who have served. This is an important time for AmeriCorps Alums to raise our voices, as decision makers in Washington make crucial decisions that could impact the future of national service. The key to the success of saving national service will be for alumni of AmeriCorps and its supporters to make our stories both seen and heard!

Tell us why you serve. Submit your video to the “I Serve Because…” Video Contest.
