Urban Teacher Center Actively Recruiting AmeriCorps Alums

Urban Teacher Center (UTC) is looking to hire AmeriCorps Alums into its pioneering alternative teacher preparation program in Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD (and soon additional cities).  The UTC program offers a year-long residency with a host teacher, a free-dual master’s, extensive one-on-one coaching and dual certification that is tied to demonstrating improvement in student achievement.  UTC quickly recognized that applicants with AmeriCorps experience were more prepared for its unique, rigorous program than applicants with other experiences.  UTC sees how spending a year in AmeriCorps instills a very strong passion, commitment and foundation for teaching in urban schools.

In fact, UTC just hired an AmeriCorps Alum, who was initially turned down by UTC in 2010. After being turned down, this alumna spent the next two years serving in an AmeriCorps program before applying again to UTC with her new experiences and skills. This time she was accepted to join UTC’s Cohort 2013. UTC is looking for more AmeriCorps Alums who are interested in applying their AmeriCorps experience to its work, while also aspiring to be some of the nation’s most expert and accountable urban, public school teachers.

Please consider applying to UTC by one of its last two deadlines: February 1 or March 15 to join Cohort 2013 in June 2013. Serving my first AmeriCorps term with AmeriCorps NCCC and second one at City Year Miami built the foundation for me to have an in-depth understanding and appreciation of the mission behind the Urban Teacher Center organization, where I am a current graduate student and resident teacher in the D.C. area.  I finally am able to bring all my experiences from my two years in AmeriCorps and put them into effect in improving low performing schools. Through my AmeriCorps experience, it  has allowed me to tap into my ethnicity, my education, my public-school up-bringing, my morals, my skills, my beliefs, my passion, and my background to help students reach their life goals by giving them a quality education.

Angelika Dorman, a graduate of Clark Atlanta University and two- term AmeriCorps Alum, is a resident teacher at Benjamin Orr Elementary School in the southeast area of Washington, D.C. and is committed in providing high quality education to her students. She is committed to community service on a global level and has first-hand experienced the various issues facing our communities around the nation. During her first year of service with AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps, she was able to dig in and help strengthen communities in the cities of Denver, Houston, and Mobile. In her second year of service with organization called City Year, she was committed in decreasing the drop-rate among high school students in an area of Miami called Little Haiti.

I chose to serve in City Year San Antonio to make an impact by serving students who were living in my local community. My City Year experience allowed me to work with students academically and connect and motivate students as a mentor. I also had the opportunity to learn more about what the experience was like for teachers in public education. After my AmeriCorps service, I was very interested in becoming a teacher and considering alternative certification programs that focused on teacher preparation in a different setting that I was working in. I ultimately chose Urban Teacher Center because of their commitment in providing effective tools for teachers to enhance student achievement and success in especially high need areas.

James M. Dominguez is native to San Antonio, Texas and graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree in Drawing in 2010. After graduation, he completed a year of service as a corps member with City Year San Antonio 2011-2012 working as a tutor, mentor, and role model at Somerset Jr. High School. He is currently working as a Resident Teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools pursing a master’s degree in education.
